Helgrind - Under Norrøn Himmel

Helgrind - "Under Norrøn Himmel" - 40%

thecarcass, December 16th, 2005

This is the first (and only) release Denmark's Helgrind have ever done.
Helgrind is a one-man band, and that shows. The songs on this demo are very good old-school black metal compositions - no doubt. This is a man who knows about true black metal. But still, the songs are lacking something - I can't really point out what it is, sometimes it just sounds as if the song was put together in no time, not thinking it through. The songs are extremly simple guitarriffing and a very, very scary and almost crushing vocal. I don't think I've ever heard a black metal vocals like this one - very good!
I do miss a bit more structure in the songs and less simplicity. Even Darkthrone sounds technical compared to Helgrind.
The sound/production is lacking a lot. It's not a good sound at all, but, this is a debut demo CD, and it's without a doubt worth listening to!

Conclusion: Helgrind is ols-school black metal as it was intended, still with a bad production, it's really dark and evil!
