Häive - Saimaata ei sanoilla selitä

Saimaa can't be explained by words... - 50%

Bolth_Mannn, June 8th, 2010

...however this band doesn't explain it well through music either. This band has the complete set up. They have the image, they have the name, they have the promises, they have everything, but they just don't have the music to live up to their game. This music is by no means BAD, it just doesn't arouse emotion inside of you either...It's just there.

The first song starts and everything looks promising with a nice, peaceful intro. Then suddenly the metal comes in, and the emotion is lost. The music is decent and this guy can definitely play his instruments well, however, there is just no meaning to this. The main riff is just plain terrible, in my opinion. Its uplifting but right at the wrong moment, and then suddenly a flute (I think) comes in, and wrecks all validity this riff may have had. The rest of the song goes through all the standard notions of a sub-par instrumental song.

The second song has a better main melody, however, it sounds more like a christmas carol than a beautiful insight to the lakes of Saimaa. This song is more structured and straight to the point but it still lacks the emotion. Unfortunately there is just nothing of note in the song. The third song sounds like something out of an old classic rock album, and while this isn't a bad thing, as before, it lacks emotion! This EP is meant to be about emotion yet this band fails to deliver.

The songs are all decent and are structured well, but the overall songwriting of this guy is flawed. He definitely has potential but really needs to work on his game. This is a good album to pick up if you see it in a bargain bin, but don't go running out trying to find it, as it is not worth it. You will be better off searching for Haive's full length.
