Gwar - S.F.W.

Sofa King Watt - 70%

DawnoftheShred, October 28th, 2012

Written for the soundtrack to the movie of the same title which, as far as I know, was never made (EDIT: it was, but it's Hollywood trash instead of basement budget GWAR goodness), “SFW” is one of the rare GWAR singles to get an actual release, rather than just rotting in the cellar for decades and getting slapped together on some shoddy fan-club compilation. Released right in the middle of the band’s most prolific era, “SFW” sadly failed to get included on a studio album, thus limiting its distribution and making it hard to come by, even on the shoddy fan-club compilation.

Anyway, it’s a shame cause the song is so fucking solid, it would’ve been/could’ve been on the Ragnarok album released around the same time. Well sorta solid, I like the weird timing in the drum intro more than the actual song proper. Still, it’s a nice example of the kind of groovy alternative metal GWAR was peddling at the time, very tightly performed and well-produced, though a bit funkier and not as musically dominant as some of their earlier/later stuff. The drumming is the unexpected highlight here, and it's over far too soon, but it’s still primo mid-era sing-songy GWAR goodness, and that should be enough for most people, so go download it already, peons.

They also released a censored version of this song. So fucking what?
