Grey - Suspended in Time

Heavily Underrated - 100%

Metalhead Pear, December 12th, 2019

When you think of the New York Death Metal scene that swept Long Island in the late 90's, you probably think of the main cast like Internal Bleeding, Skinless, and Pyrexia. While the entire community was underground there were other bands that were even below the bands I just mentioned like 420, and S.P.O.R.E. But there is one band that sticks out to me and that is Grey. What stands out to me is that there is minimal information about the project and the guy behind it. Like the only thing that's confirmed is this demo was released on cassettes independently, and the demo is on YouTube.

Anyways, the actual demo is an unrecognized masterpiece. The production is so raw that it really sets them apart from any other band in the genre. The guitars are super fuzzed and the riffs and riff changes will keep anyone on the edge of their seat. especially with all the "slam" riffs thrown in, not to mention that the guitar parts are executed to perfection. My favorite part has to be about 2 minutes into the first song titled "Grey" where it gets super groovy for about 15 seconds. Bass fills in perfectly with the mix. Now my personal favorite part, drums. Specifically the kick drums, which are literally the single best kick drums I have ever heard in my life up to this point. The vocals are the the cherry on top of this brutal pie of filth. Filled with inhales and even some gutturals mixed in, it just proves my point that this release was way ahead of it's time. Lastly, the song structure is truly something to be looked up to in terms of excitment. To me, the tempo changes, riffs, and that fucking amazing kick drum are what makes this release one of if not my favorite NYDM release.

I find it really unfortunate that this band never made anything else and that very little is apparently known about the mastermind behind all of this Kevin Greenberg. I really hope that sometime in the future this project gets picked up again and they release more because I would love to hear more of this sort of stuff. This release was truly the epiphany of the "underground".
