Grenouer - Presence with War

A Farewel to... Death Metal - 70%

SkilledDick, March 19th, 2007

Why is this album definitely good? ‘Cause it is well done. Why is this album fairly bad? ‘Cause it is far from exciting. All of 8 songs of Presence With War sound like a standard death metal band’s album about a war. Bolt Thrower and Benediction will be the right comparison. Oh no, there’s something not standard about Grenouer’s death metal, it is has some hardcore which is also suitable for war themes. This or that way if you dislike slow death metal riffs and you are into grinding and terrific blastbeats then switch to another review. Go on if you don’t mind something heavy, solid and easy to understand. Label it like boring.
In fact Grenouer show good musical skills and experience and they don’t rush into things. War machine crawls down to peaceful villages and town and then tramples them down. The sound of the album is thick and intentionally (I am sure) monotonous, industrialized and memorable. The songs have appropriate titles like CRASH CRASH CRASH or THE LAST BULLET MAGIC. The artwork is not a bloody massacre, here’s a Monster wearing gas mask, good idea. The thing one should keep in mind is that this is Grenouer’s farewell to death metal, since the band has already moved somewhere else, but this is not a farewell to arms of course. Presence With War sounds solid enough but I personally would surely get depressed by the idea of listening to Presence With War pt. 2 and fortunately this is not going to happen just because Grenouer next CD Try kicks ass with plenty of experiments, breath taking ideas and elaborated melodies.
