Grauzeit - Promo 2012

Going through a musical transition - 90%

Gaze08, January 31st, 2020

The sound of depression, I've always felt fascinated by the clean and sad guitar tones, few are the bands that reach the perfect balance between sadness and aggresivity, what I meant by aggresivity? What Grauzeit achieved with Tyrannei der Tristesse II nothing less than that.

In a scene collapsed by a bunch of "shitty" dsbm acts one would prefer to not listen to whatever's under the label "dsbm" at least that's my case, and I wouldn't blame you if you missed this release when It came out, however Grauzeit is far from the regular dsbm band, I remember back in 2012 when It came out there weren't many post black metal bands around, only the ones that made this sub genre known worldwide and some depressive black metal bands that were going through a musical transition from dsbm to post black metal, Grauzeit is one of those bands, if you pay attention to their discography their sound evolution between 2012 and 2017 is an obvious transition to "post black metal".

Anyway, what's being said, these guys know how to write a dsbm song, Tyrannei der Tristesse can be listened as many times as you want and you won't get tired of it by this simple reason: the band put together the perfect elements of a song, a nice drum sound, not an excessive use of the drum kit just what's needed to give to the song what It needs, the guitars are mostly clean during the whole song except in some parts, this instrument just as the drums doesn't seems to be the protagonist of the song, the bass does its job, and It works in perfect harmony with the rest of the instruments, and finally the vocals, I love it, these guys seems to know that a good song doesn't necessarily needs a display of technique.

Tyrannei der Tristesse is the proof some musicians needs to realize that this kind of music is all about expression and not exhibitionism, we all know there are some great musicians, but we all also agree (that's what I hope) that some kind of emotional expressivity is needed in a sub genre like this.
