Gorepot - Fermenting the Chiba Seeds

Definitely the best Gorepot album - 90%

In terms of personality, slam death metal is a very two-dimensional genre. While the style of music is often compared to the much-more personality-rich deathcore, slam itself can be seen differing the most from deathcore due to the immense lack of emotion and attitude that listeners get out of listening to deathcore. While there have been many slam bands to override the "no personality" rule in some strange way (Parasitic Ejaculation, Kraanium and Acranius are just a few of these), they're usually relying on deathcore aesthetic or even sound to inject a heap of personality into their music.

Gorepot can be added to this list, while the band have clinically zero deathcore sound to their music, the personality definitely feels prevalent. It's not surprising, albeit lead guttural roarer Larry Wang has been a part of a deathcore band (Beyond Cure) for over 2 full-length albums. His goofy and friendly attitude definitely surfaces through Gorepot's music in between the inhuman frog gurgles and slam riffs. The marijuana-themed band also take heavy use of just downright absurd song titles ("Queerland Is the New Disney", "Procrasterbating Hitler Porn") which are sure to at least provoke a smirk if the absurd sound samples they use on this album don't do it for you. When the band isn't sampling clips from Family Guy, Super Mario World, Blink-182's "Family Reunion", Blood on the Dance Floor's "Sexting" or popular YouTube videos on this album, you'll eventually get to the music which also isn't quite that bad.

As the headline of this review speaks for itself, I believe this really is the best Gorepot album for a number of reasons and I'll give you a hint, it isn't because of the BOTDF sample. The production is sick, the slams come through like an earthquake while the guttural vocals reconcile over the entire monstrosity that this weed-themed CD smashes you across the head with. Gorepot really is the slam death equivalent to Cannabis Corpse in terms that just because the cannabis references and theme is prioritized (even included in their band name) that the band really show that weed references is not a mere gimmick for you to listen to their music. The music itself comes through and hits you harder than any of the ridiculous pop culture sound samples do. Songwriting is even tighter on this outing than the band's proceeding album All You Can Smoke (2014).

How does this album stand up to its slam death metal peers in the grand scheme of things? Well if I could compare it to any band, it would most likely be put as a heavy companion to those who enjoy Vulvectomy, Abominable Putridity and Female Nose Breaker. To say it simply, this is a really great slam album and every bit of fun the genre has to offer is milked to the very last drop in every second this record has to offer. In the end, Gorepot really show that personality in your music is just as important as the songs themselves - even if it's as ridiculous as including a Blood on the Dance Floor song in one of your songs.
