Gojira - Wisdom Comes

Part IV: Henceforth, Gojira - 100%

Petrus_Steele, May 1st, 2021
Written based on this version: 1999, CD, Independent (Limited edition)

The final demo of Godzilla features more new demos for their upcoming debut record, along with two original songs to this release, and another demo for their sophomore. Too bad the album cover isn’t recognizable, though. The direction towards their debut has strengthened all aspects, as the songs are much heavier, unique, and technical to how extraordinary Gojira would sound. Looking back at what I said regarding no more improvements, these new demo versions aren’t exactly an improvement, but they’re distinctive than the first three demo versions from Godzilla‘s Saturate release. That’s some accomplishment for the quality.

To start with the four demos for Terra Incognita, you get a mixture of aggressive, sometimes unclean vocals to the very death growls. As expected, the slow, groovy riffs never get old, and the drums are incredible. What I found most interesting is the songwriting for Satan Is a Lawyer. It sounds like alternative/post-grunge, based on the riffs and the style of vocals. It’s got its heavier moments, sure, but the aforementioned genres in this aspect sounded quite well and arguably better than the bands of these genres. Although the music doesn’t sound that technical as I anticipated, it’s still enlightening and thorough. Love is another interesting song, combining atmosphere, heavy riffs, and maniacal bass lines.

As for the other three tracks. Wisdom Come is straight up brutal; short, but brutal. For two minutes, you get catchy riffs, blast beats, and the icing on the cake is the groove element inserted. It’s just strange how they would reintroduce the song on The Link, as that record is more atmospheric and slow than the debut. The following two original songs for this release also combine atmosphere with the traditional heavy material, which includes slow melodies and sometimes unique clean vocals style.

Godzilla-turning-Gojira was an interesting and cool era that mostly focused on the band’s experiment, yet delivering awesome, memorable, and groovy death metal music. Although I’m still of the opinion that their second demo Possessed is one of their best releases, in all the Gojira chronology, giving this last demo a perfect score might be a promising change, despite what critics suggest of their debut record. The best songs are Lizard Skin, Satan Is a Lawyer, Love, and Wisdom Come.
