Geomancer - Euro Demo

Instrumental Metal - 90%

capeda, April 29th, 2003

Alright, let me start off by saying that this is awesome stuff.... well, no, not really.... thats kinda selling it short. It's FUCKING awesome.

This is a demo which was recorded and mixed in the span of 2 weeks, and it shows. The production is VERY dirty and raw. If you can stand productions typical of bands like Darkthrone, it's really not such a big deal. You can clearly hear the bass, drums, and both guitars, as well as every mistake the band makes while playing.

There are four songs here, all of which are over ten minutes long. Three songs are actually closer to 15 minutes long, so you get a lot of music for your money (I paid 5 bucks). The style of music is instrumental metal. Its not like Liquid Tension and Gordian Knot, though, as those bands sporadically sprinkle metal elements in some of their songs... Geomancer, on the other hand, occasionally adds the non-metal elements (acoustic guitars, violins) to their predominantly metal music.

The music itself is heavily influenced by the thrash and power subgenres. Lots of riffs. Most are pretty memorable... after listening to the song Tempest twice, I almost had the whole 16 minute piece committed to memory. Solos blaze in and out of the songs, and they always add to the intensity level of the music. They're nothing spectacular, I guess, no fancy jazz styled leads with impeccable note choice or whatever... but they're very melodic and very shreddingly fast. The bass player does a very good job, himself; I only heard one glaring mistake from him in Ninja Forest (either it was a mistake or a bad fill). The drummer keeps the music progressing at a quick pace. Lots of double bass, even a handful of blast beats (not many at all).

Highlights? Well, Tempest and Progeny are definitely my favorites. All 4 songs provide a lot of diverse riffs, so they're all worth checking out.

Low points? Hmmm... well, I GUESS the production will turn a lot of people off of Geomancer, and thats really a shame. Also, the music was mastered a bit too low, so you gotta turn the volume up on your cd player a little louder than normal.

Anyways, I implore you to check these guys out. They have some free music downloads at their website www.geomancer.cjb.net , so you have no excuse to avoid hearing Geomancer!
