Genghis Khan - Double Dealin

Before the Blade.... - 90%

nightzblood, January 21st, 2008

In case the story still needs clarification, this band intended to release two singles in a single pack. However, they decided to change their name to Tokyo Blade, so the singles had to be re-labeled, and they were also changed over to be individual singles rather than a two pack. Very few copies of the original Genghis Khan double-pack made it into circulation, and the item has been bootlegged (watch out for ‘white label promo copies’).

Musically, this is excellent stuff very much in the vein of early Tokyo Blade material. More melodic than Iron Maiden but more metallic than Def Leppard, the band seemed to possess the best of both worlds at the time. All four songs are tightly written and feature great hooks, excellent guitar work, and are extremely catchy and memorable. While some may be a bit too commercial-friendly for some people (particularly the great ‘Midnight Rendezvous’) there’s just no denying the talent on display here. Fortunately, all four tracks were reworked as B-sides and bonus tracks on various Tokyo Blade releases, so you can enjoy them without tracking down the original singles.
