Both these bands produce high quality Folk Metal with their own twist, but still this cd manages to sound like a unity, which is something I really appreciate in any split release.
For me the best part of this release are the lyrics, but both bands play and write their music very well.
Now on to the moment you've all been waiting for, the bands:
Wapenspraak en Drinkgelag
This band is a bit closer to black metal than Garmenhord, the songs vary from cleanish melodic black metal to songs that are more folk than metal.
The vocals are very high but slightly less raspy than what you get used to listening to black metal, the best thing about them is that the Belgian accent is very audible even while the singer is screaming.
The most memorable songs for me on this side are Wechselbalg(changeling) and Als de Carnyx Schreeuwt(When the Carnyx Screams). Wechselbalg has a very catchy folk melody and both songs have great lyrics if you can understand what is being said.
A slight downside to this release is that the live version of Puur Heidens KrijgsMetaal(Pure Heathen War Metal) is less good than the studio version on the bands previous demo. This is also the last song on Wapenspraak's side, so I will move on to:
Garmenhord:
This "side" has a clearly more folky feel to it than the other one, sometimes even flirting with ambient, though never really losing its metal feel.
The vocals here are a lot lower, which brings out the thick Belgian accent even more, but also makes the vocalist sound like Pumba from the Dutch voice-over of the Disney classic The Lion King sometimes. I have a slight preference for this side of the record, though I find that with Wapenspraak its easier to like individual songs.
High point for me is De Val van Raepenburg(The Fall of the Raepenburg) Its a catchy song about the robbers gang led by the Garm(Garmenhord means the horde of the Garm) pillaging a farmstead.
no real letdowns here.
Conclusion:
A memorable album for any fan of pagan, folk or viking metal, but you need to be able to understand the language to get the full enjoyment out of this disc. Wherever you're from, my advice would still be to buy this though.
