Gardenian - Two Feet Stand

Before The Downfall - 77%

TheReactor, December 1st, 2023

This album is just long enough to capture the typical fan of the genres attention with the songs that can run together at times but songs that consisted of very imaginative melodies and different styles of melodic riffs throughout. The album opens with a nice high energy riff and has the feel of the many other melodeath bands from Sweden in the 90's. The riffs were quite original overall, I couldn't help but think how some of these melodic riffs and songs reminded me slightly of early to mid 2000's Bodom, pretty interesting. They weren't as elaborate but still sounded similar to a riff Alexi would have written back in the day. As far as my favorite riffs on the album, that would have to be on the track "Downfall", "Murder..." had my favorite solo, "Awake of Abuse" had some of my favorite guitar harmonies, and "Flipside of Reality" had some nice choppy riffs. The closing track "The Silent Fall" had a really nice melancholic clean riff to send the listener off, it complemented the album very well.

I enjoyed the vocalist style but he could lack range at times, he needed to practice more false chord and his growls, I still enjoyed them though. The backing vocals on "Flipside of Reality" could have been omitted. I will say I really enjoyed the vocals on "Freedom" and believe the vocal performance on that song was not only better but more unique and could have worked for the whole album. I thought the drums sounded pretty catchy and good overall, mixed decently too. The recording and mixing for the album was not the best even for 1997, but I would much rather listen to an album of this genre with lower production than something that's too overproduced. The cover art for this album is very unique and intriguing, it fits the music and genre well. I can recommend this album to someone who enjoys the lesser known melodic death metal from the 90's.
