Unholy Grail

Lately I have been very selective when it comes to extreme doom. I feel there is a real lack of innovation and every day another band appears in the ' spotlight ' that again fails to hold my attention and general interest in the band. But luckily there are soom good ones out there. And as you could have anticipated Gallileous is one of them even though a single release doesn't present enough material to already form a decisive opinion. One thing is sure, they are on the right track and hopefully Ego Sum Censore Deuum - upcoming debut out in July - will confirm my high expectations. Until then Unholy Grail will get quite a lot of spins in order to fully prepare myself for Ego Sum Censore Deuum. Unholy Grail is the first official release of Gallileous in over a decade! It features two songs: Anti Vaticano which will also be featured on the debut and Unholy Grail which is an exclusive song for this single release.


Both tracks feature quite a lot of keys, but don’t let that put you off. They are implemented tastefully, even though they might at times sound a little to ‘ out there ‘, but don’t let that bother you as they create a real epic listening experience without every sounding too cheesy. Vocally we have on the one hand the typical deeper growls, nothing outstanding but well performed nonetheless, but where Gallileous really shines out is with the higher ‘ tortured ‘ screams. They are truly one of a kind and sound nothing like the ones often found in DBM outfits nowadays. First of all they are not really depressive in any way. They are just constant outbursts of agression and hatred without every showing any sign of mercy. Production is solid as you is usually the case with this kind of extreme doom. Cleaner than most black, but always allowing some degree of rawness. I can only hope Ego Sum Censore Deuum will be of equal high quality doom. If that is the case, then Gallileous can already be named as one of the real contenders for 2008. Hopefully I have been able to persuade you to give this release a chance.
