Death metal brutes Fumes have recently had 2 of their EPs and a new song unleashed as a compilation via Morbid Chapel Records and Rotten Tomb Records. Time to jump into the chaotic viscera.

Wasting no time with their blistering concoctions of death metal, utilising plentiful technically to offer an otherworldly edge to their brutality, Fumes clearly know how to put their tracks together. Chugging, blundering and shredding with tight instrumentals that expand upon themselves brilliantly, the cosmic soundscapes of the EP’s is woven gorgeously together as we see progression from the first to the second while they fit seamlessly together. Aside from a slight jump in volume, it could easily be one longer release.

Blending meaty bass lines with mind-bending riffs and warped vocals atop solid and consistently punchy drum programming, the remnants of bands like Blood Incantation can be heard in the bands vast repertoire of sounds while perhaps the brutality of Malignancy and the like is also borrowed. Imagine the technical edge of Gorguts with the primal brutishness of Mortician and you will have an idea what to expect, tight and heavy yet chaotic and progressive insanity.

All of the ferocity and technicality culminates as a stellar performance that moulds the old school and the new with 5 tracks of putrid, convulsing and abyssal death metal that will certainly get heads banging and guts spilling. There is a unique edge from the progressions while never feeling too obnoxious or complex to steer away from a crushing storm of stomping riffs and breakneck grooves. This is the kind of material that may give some hope to those who think all technical death metal is obnoxious as this thing retains that filthiness we all love while still being pretty clean in terms of playing. Either way, a strong slab of death metal.
