A Diamond in the Haystack - 95%

tomcat_ha, June 24th, 2013

Ahh... Here we have one special gem. This demo by Fornjotr is one of my all-time favorite demos, even more than that it is my all-time favorite brutal death metal release. While I have to admit that brutal death metal is hardly my thing most of the time and thus it is not very hard for something to be my favorite brutal death metal release. (I just do not find BDM very brutal, a lot of it is great music to sleep on though.) This release is something special even when compared to areas of Death Metal I do love.

So what do we have here? Well this is not a typical BDM demo. This demo can best be described as what happens when you combine the second Gorguts album with classic Finnish Death Metal, random NYDM elements and turn the heaviness knob far to the right. The tempo is often mid-paced. There are not any slams here either. I also think I taste a touch of black metal here and there. I am not sure this actually qualifies under what traditionally gets called BDM. To me it is just a very heavy OSDM styled death metal album and that is exactly why I love it.

I am trying to think of any obvious issues with this demo and I cannot come with any other than the demo being too short and I can hardly subtract points for that. No the guitar tones are crushingly heavy; the vocals are varied and powerful. The drums sound very good. The 3 songs on it all have their obvious own character and are very catchy with just the right amount of riffs, killer tempo changes, songs are the right length heck even the drumming which is often something very boring in BDM is varied and done right. Even the sound quality is fine, which is rare for a demo. No I cannot think of anything bad to say about this release.

This demo is pretty much one of those rare perfect storms that hits a sparsely inhabited island. Witnessed by just a few, but those who have can just agree that it is something special and unique. It is a shame that the band only released one more thing after this. A split under their new name, F. Nothing has been heard from them since. I really hope however that they will return with a new release. This demo definitely shows that the duo behind Fornjotr/F was capable of writing some of the best songs this side of Death Metal.

In short the conclusion: GET THIS DEMO.
