Forest Silence - The Eternal Winter

Ambient Black Metal... - 90%

Acherontic, July 27th, 2007

This is one of the few bands that can get away with guitars that are little more than static, mostly due to the atmospherics. Layers of synth effects are the main focus of each song, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. Even though this is, without a doubt, a Black Metal release, it functions as ambient music in a way unachieved by even Burzum or Drudkh (for the most part). Each sound is carefully arranged, proving that technicality in metal is overrated in today's 'scene'. The atmosphere, as mentioned, is almost overwhelming.

"The Eternal Winter" and "I Feel The Claws Of Darkness" are more or less created in the same fashion, although the latter is a little more Black Metal and doesn't have the hypnotic weaving melody "The Eternal Winter" has.
The closing track, while not being metal, is still rather good. Piano, a few unidentifiable noises, and some minimal vocal wok rounds out this excellent demo. Instead of being harsh and aggressive, this music seems almost... soothing.
This is certainly a unique release, and it must have taken some doing creating this perfect balance of Ambient and Black Metal. Highly recommended.
