Firewind - Live Premonition

Great but not much of a "live experience" - 80%

ApolloFC, April 23rd, 2009

So why do I get concert dvds of artists? Cause I rarely get to see the great bands play their songs live while living in a town thats full of college/indie rock. But here is what I don't like about dvds. The producers.

When i first got a hold of this dvd I was rather excited. I had liked Gus G from his work with Dream Evil (who are still awesome without em) and was glad that I got to see him play in a live environment. Theres a nice selection of tracks various albums picked for this performance. It was kinda cool watching bob play his solo(s) on both the guitar and keyboard at the same time and the drummer looks like he should be in a porno.

Anyway.

The prodution on this album is balance wise: drums have a good mix, guitars/keys/vox mixed fairley well. But what i don't like about this dvd is that the producers after the show want to mute the crowd except for when the band interacts with the crowd. You could pretty muh just buy the live cd, upload individual tracks to youtube add high quality concert pictures to the tracks/videos and get close to the same result. Better yet, think about what it would be like for Firewind to do a "live in the studio" type dvd.. thats basically what this is except they are on stage.

Also I didn't really like the camera angles / direction used for the dvd. Take it from an audience perspective. You physically can not fly around in the air every single beat to get a different view of the band unless you are superman. Instead, you are usually stuck in one spot right? I can understand why producers/directors would enjoy editing it they way that it is.. doing something different with the timing of the music and editing the shots to match the music. But sometimes people just want to stare at a guitarist or the drummer for a few seconds without feeling like they are watching Bourne movie.

In the end, the great thing about this dvd is finally getting a chance to see Gus G play live if you haven't had a chance to. Great video quality but overall audio is holding me back from giving this dvd a higher rating.
