Fiend - Demo 2013

Hateful minds - 64%

gasmask_colostomy, December 4th, 2022

No doubt you’ll notice that Demo 2013 is all about attitude. Fiend don’t care about you at all and are angry at other stuff too, so this filthy blast through barely 5 minutes (there are 7 songs) is instructive of all the negativity in their hateful minds. On one hand, grindcore obviously has something to do with it, yet the sonics of the listen relate more to death metal, with thick string tones, fairly low growls, and manic blasts and scrambles that combine the 2 styles into one. The slowed down mid-part of 'Y'all Suck' gives out the vibe of brutal death heavy-handedness too. With every cut under a minute and samples shortening some even more, I barely feel the effect of individual songs, while the release as a whole gives the sensation of being assaulted several times in quick succession and then left bleeding on the pavement. As the blood spills out through my headwounds and I consider the aggression of the attacker, I reflect that a sharper instrument might have left a deeper impression, although the blunt force of these blows contain enough disgusted grit and phlegm to make my last moments genuinely very nasty. That's definitely what Fiend wanted: for me to suffer ignominiously and die futilely. A cover of 'Stop Posing and Kill Someone' emphasizes why I, as a poser, was knocked off.
