I'll keep this short, in hopes of not distracting you from obtaining this record any longer.
Simply, I love this LP. I mean, an obscure vinyl-only release with (seemingly mere but fucking dense) two pummeling tracks of some truly cult raw/drone black metal clocking in at nearly 20 minutes a piece? Sounds gold to me. I was a huge fan of the (also self-titled) tape these guys released last year, and amazing as that recording is, the songs on this record are truly even better. The atmosphere is considerably more drone/ambient oriented, and the lead guitar riffs have a noticeably more prominent and driving psychedelic harmony going on. Instrumentation was always spectacular and even this is improved. Less vocals, too, and more reverb - Awesome!
Of all the genres Fell Voices take a step further, it really comes down to what they do for black metal. In a style somewhat typified by a lack of bass guitar or low-end frequencies at all, the crushing bass tone and is a welcome contrast. These guys really outdo themselves when it comes to instrumentation - Every element they have going instrument-wise is just so intensely and punishingly performed, with trance-like precision, and constantly morphing into new sections of a perfect fit. The drums, especially, are incredibly great. One of, if not the best drummers I've ever heard., especially live. A complete spit in the face of the contemporary black metal rock stars who think that lifeless speed and triggered blasturbation are anything but trivial; Michael Rekevics deserves recognition. He performs a sort of grimey, somewhat blackened powerviolence in Mohoram Atta (see their split LP with Thou) with great passion and energy but it's really nothing compared to the power and sheer force on Fell Voices. In the live setting, these songs are even more densely textured and psychedelic, filling the entire room with layers upon layers of droning ambience and fury.. Truly an experience.
Case in point; This is better than your favorite band. One of the best records in years, by a band who actually deserve the attention. You've been warned.
