My Endless Immensity

Falaise is an Italian duo who combine triumphant melodies with tortured vocals and crushing rhythms. Lyrically, most of the tracks found here deal with themes of existentialism, depression, nostalgia, and hope. A labor of love, it is obvious Falaise did not set out to impress or inspire anyone in My Endless Immensity (or any of their past work, for that matter), and instead opted to create something purely expressive and down to earth.

The production here perfectly suites the record; often there is so much going on the individual instrumentals are only barely discernible; instead what you hear are lulling, perfectly paced walls of sound and rhythm that crush the listener with pure unfiltered emotion. Tapping into the raw and genuine potential of the style, Falaise take the dreamy interpretation of the genre found in Alcest and similar artists, and make it their own, adding, strong, progressive and uplifting leads into the mix, alongside lovely synth sections that blend right in to the music and never feel out of place. The result is a chaotic mix of pride, anger, joy, and sadness, often all at once. Most impressive is Falaise's ability to surprise with every track-hell, every minute-they are able to create a solid atmosphere without much repetition.

As with many black metal records, the lyrics are not at the forefront of the experience, but nonetheless the liner notes here read like poetry. It tells the tale of a tortured soul unable to find meaning or a point to his existence. Struggling with bouts of depression, a lost love, and thoughts of suicide, the narrator escapes his mundane surroundings in an attempt to free himself. Coalescing in the final minutes of the closing track, "A Veil of Stars", he, accompanied by what can only be described as pure sonic bliss, has found some solace, some release from his bleak existence-

The record is as engaging and dynamic as this form of music can possibly get-if ever you were bored by Deafheaven or Ghost Bath or at least put off by their brighter aesthetics, you should still give Falaise a chance. My Endless Immensity is moving, crushing, soothing, and exciting all at once.
