I am truly beginning to believe that Abominable Putridity is responsible for setting the bar straight for the sound of all slam bands in or surrounding Russia, examples include - but are not limited to - Disfigurement of Flesh, Extermination Dismemberment, Disarticulating Extinguishment and Ukraine's own Ezophagothomia is no different. The guitar riffs on this album (which are mostly slams) and even their tone are very reminiscent of the work performed on In the End of Human Existence; the incredible debut by Abominable Putridity themselves. Ezophagothomia and their 7-syllable name don't hesitate to just constantly slam away, some classic death metal influence shines in their music a little more than your typical slam band (hence the Mortal Decay cover) but besides that, this is your standard staple for the slam death metal genre alongside Cephalotripsy, Epicardiectomy or Gorevent.
The vocalist's groaning gutturals hover over the flat slams like a syrup covering a plate of pancakes. These Kiev-native Ukrainians have proven that they really know how to write violent and dreadful sounding death metal with a vocalist who suits the whole package. The bass guitar even comes in there somewhere rearing its head like it's just adding to the barrage of chaos almost like a guy trying to get in on piling some poor victim in a ferocious beating. Some experimentation seems to be present in their formula as well, and an example I can give is that of what sounds to be an acoustic guitar solo at the end of "When Earth Will Be Tired of Us".
Before this album, I became a fan of Ezophagothomia because of their demo Ezophagothomical Invasion and while the songs are a lot shorter and more produced here than on that demo album, they still retain a lot of the same structural foundation. The band tend to enjoy to bounce back between faster sections and then just play slams throughout what seems like a eternity and give no fucks about it. Another factor is that the band also enjoys this weird staple of including eerie sound samples as their own tracks; much like they did on their demo. This album includes a intro track, an outro track and a interlude all containing sounds that I can't really identify what exactly it is that I'm hearing. These interlude sounds kind of remind me of those eerie spooky CD audio discs that people purchase for Halloween to play on their stereos for their haunted houses.
The production is really hit-or-miss, overproduced slam can either be good or bad (usually bad) as it can strip away the potential brutality (Analepsy and Abnormity), or it can strengthen it (Syphilectomy and Embryectomy) depending on how it's done. While the production here is flat, the caveman-esque brutality still comes through like a hammer through a plank of wood. While I still favor how their demo sounds over this, the songwriting and all is just way too superb to dismiss it as just another run-of-the-mill slam album.
This is slam death metal done right, the touch of some OSDM influences is very nice as well.
