Me oh my is this awful. Really, really, really awful. But it’s the kind of awful that is just SO terrible that it becomes highly entertaining. Painful, but entertaining nonetheless. And so, I will not review this from a point of view where I would criticize it for lacking melody, musicianship, coherency, decent production, etc. Instead I will review it from the perspective of someone who finds stuff like this hilarious, because I fall more into that category then the first.
The first thing to go is the production. My oh my is it horrendous. It sounds like he took his 4-track tape recorder, dipped it in tar, and dried it out in an oven. He then proceeded to record with it, but placed blankets over the microphone he was using (assuming he was actually using one). Some people may see this as a deterring factor, but I on the other hand find it amusing, and I wouldn’t want it any other way. And plus, do you actually WANT to hear everything that’s going on? Well, I do too, but then again, it wouldn’t be as funny.
This “Verpus” character sure did have a unique vocal style. He basically just talked into a microphone that was put through a distortion pedal and plugged directly into the 4-track, as it doesn’t sound as distant and muffled as everything else. It’s also the loudest thing in the mix, by far, and is really overbearing when played at loud volumes (which is required for ultimate hilarity). The second loudest thing in the mix is the drumming, and holy shit is he awful. He has no sense of rhythm whatsoever, and as far as coherency goes – forget about it. He’ll be blasting away randomly one second, stop in a accidental manner, then come back in with a few slow hits, then more blasting. This of course doesn’t sync up with the guitar, which seems to just be hitting random notes and making as much noise as possible. While this would certainly piss some people off, it just puts a big ear-to-ear grin on my face.
So although I find this highly amusing, I still can’t give it a high score because the reason I find it amusing in the first place is because it’s just so awful. But if you’re like me, and find old, obscure, shitty recordings funny, then go ahead and find some way to get a rip or a copy of it, as you will surely not be let down.
