Evile - Cult

Purify Your Eyes - 90%

DanielG06, June 9th, 2022

Cult gained massive success, catapulting Evile's Godly reputation even further with its accessible and infectious structure along with an anthemic chorus. However, it isn't just the accessibility of the song that made it so popular, but Cult is a showcase of some of Evile's best writing, with an iconic groove and how perfectly the verses flow. The song is mid-tempo, which is very uncharacteristic for Evile with most of their discography consisting of lightning-fast songs. But, don't mistake this for stagnancy or a lack of inspiration. The slowed down, more laid-back rhythm supports Cult's legendary driving beat and how the simple kick-snare pattern carries the muscle of the song. In contrast to the otherwise simplistic song structure, the solo is bluesy and technical, sounding similar to something from Metalllica's Black Album.

One of the highlights of this song is the haunting middle section, with a brooding vocal melody and an infectious catchiness over the slow but intense chord progression. The B-side to this single is In Memoriam; an acoustic rendition to top it off. Although less famous, In Memoriam is an incredible ballad which shows diversity in Evile's sound and an ability to write non-heavy music that is still consistent and memorable too. With this single, you get two great songs that get better the more you listen to them. Not only does this period represent the peak of Evile's sound, but also the perfect balance between an accessible sound and retention of their intense sound.
