Evil Incarnate / Blaspherian - Behold: The Endless Glory of Baphomet

Eh, they could do better - 62%

Noktorn, March 27th, 2010

Evil Incarnate's track here is quite odd; recorded after 'Waiting For His Return', the production is very degraded from that album and the drums appear to be programmed, in addition to a strange, seemingly distorted, croaky vocal presence. It's definitely just as strange as the band normally is, but in a different way; the track constantly alternates between chaotic, blasting tremolo and a very Six Feet Underish grooving refrain where the charming song title is chimed out repeatedly. It's sort of a maelstrom which repeatedly collapses into itself; it's not quite as definitely weird in the NYDMish sense of 'Waiting For His Return', but it's certainly a curious one. I just wish the production was improved; it's smothered and overly distorted and I think it would go over better with more clarity.

Funny enough, Blaspherian's track really recalls Evil Incarnate's 'Blackest Hymns Of God's Disgrace' with its churning, oldschool riffs and menacing drum presence. The vibe is quite reminiscent of oldschool Tampa death metal with just a hint of Incantation-style darkness. The vocals on this track seem rather out of place; the rhythms are kind of random and don't really do much with the rest of the music, operating in their own little universe, but the instruments seem fairly good even if the structure of the song is a little incoherent; riffs begin and end at seemingly random times and there's not a major narrative thread guiding it. Any given moment of 'Of Unholy Blood' is good, but it's actually less than the sum of its parts.

All in all, a fairly average little 7"; if you're a fan of oldschool death metal it's not bad but there's better material out there really.
