One part of the Colombian metal scene that doesn't get talked about a lot is the black metal scene, where just over 600 of these types of bands are listed in MA. This area of the scene really does need some more attention, especially since one of the best bands to come from that country is Erzebet with their 1997 demo "Por siempre Necrolust". It might not be a lot, but this demo shows off some amazing instrumentals and vocals.
One great thing about the demo is the instruments. Since the band plays raw black metal, the production isn't gonna be the best, but that doesn't mean the instrumentals are bad either. One of the best examples of this comes from the song "Mortificación". The guitars have more of a catchy tone in it, and it has a bit of a melodic feel in it. The drums also have plenty of technical moments in its beat patterns, and it does a great job in setting in the tempo of the track. The bass is also audible unlike most other raw black metal albums, and it follows along the guitars well. I especially love that guitar solo in the 2 minute mark, as it adds in more power into the raging instruments and adds some intensity in the atmosphere. Other great instrumentals are from the tracks "Noche de luna llena", "Ceremonias nocturnas, sarabanda", and "Vida Eterna". The production on this album is actually not that bad, and the instrumentals play some excellent tunes.
But it's the vocals that make this demo truly shine. Dark Moon does the vocals here, and his voice is very haunting. His vocals consist of high shrieks that are mixed in with some vampiric laughter and screams. His voice sounds really creepy, and his crazed personality enhances the disturbing instruments. One of my favorite vocal performances will have to go to the track "Noche de luna llena". The track begins with a beautiful acoustic guitar before diving straight into some depressed and groovy black metal riffs. This flows well to the vocals, where Dark Moon is chanting out his shrieks and making his descriptions of a full moon night sound more terrifying. The vocals here sound great, and it flows well to the instruments.
Overall, I had a lot of fun listening to this demo. The instrumentals have a great mix of power and emotion, and the vocals have an eerie feeling in them that is executed well. Erzebet hasn't released a ton of other work besides a split and an EP that came out just last year, but what little songs they do have sound fantastic. If you're looking for some good raw black metal from Colombia, "Por siempre Necrolust" is an album you have to check out.
