I'm glad to have Emortus in my music library. This band just keeps getting better and better. I believe they must have spent a lot of time writing this little promo because they are a lot more technical sounding now. This is something you need to get a hold of!
The first track, entitled Gouge, sets the pace for the promo. It's much faster and features a lot more guitar sounds. Along with the heaviness of the tone and speed of the riffs, there are a lot of pinch harmonics and miniature guitar solos to keep you bobbing your head. It's very entertaining to listen to in short. The bass is also much more active. There's a lot of technical bass lines in the background of the mix. As I said in the other Emortus review, the bass can help a lot. The bass lines are very fast, just as fast as the guitar lines. The drumming is relentless, crushing, and very powerful in the mix. The vocals are more centric on the Deicide style screams. It's very fitting, and very brutal.
The next track on the promo is entitled The Prophecy. It starts out slower than Gouge, but just as heavy. The guitar riffs remind me of something you might find in a good Deicide album. There's more guitar experimentation with the harmonics and solos, which is always fun to listen to. They don't take it over the edge like a deathcore band might. The bass guitar is still a bit in the background, but it supplements the guitar nicely. The drums are just as fast and technical throughout the promo, so there's not much more I can add to the description. The vocals have the same brutality, but some supplementing screams to go with them. Emortus brings back the black metal style raspy scream in this song.
The final track is entitled Abominations of Faith. This track is a lot different than the other two because it sounds very black metal. The beginning of the song reminds me of something Carpathian Forest, or a band similar to them would write. After the intro comes the intense death metal action. This song is much slower than the other tracks, but it doesn't lose the heaviness. The guitar is more tremolo sounding, which adds a nice touch. The bass is a lot more audible, and sounds very cool. The lines always jump out at you. The drumming shows more variation, which is good. Some drummers are not able to play slow stuff and make it interesting. The vocals have a lot more black metal screams, but they don't lose the Glen Benton screams. This song is the stand out track of the promo.
Emortus is still proving they have talent, and a lot of creativity. This band has nowhere to go but up if they keep releasing material like this. I'd recommend this band to fans of Deicide, and any band similar to that. Emortus is a good listen, and you'll enjoy it. Check them out if you find anything in this review appealing to you.
