Ekhymosis is a raw Colombian Speed Metal band who's style later segued into modern rock, even having a pop sounding quality. But their first 2 releases are undeniably Speed Metal, and not bad, at that. I'm not honestly sure if Juanes was the one who did vocals for this release - more than likely, it was their past vocalist, Alex. But regardless, music experts alike muse at the story of Juanes selling out, trading in his denim and leather for designer clothing and a hair stylist.
History of the band aside, Ekhymosis's first untitled EP is something short, but enjoyable. The first song, Desde Arriba Es Diferente, capping in at almost 6 minutes is, to describe it best, rifftastic. It opens with a pretty ominous sounding guitar riff - later progressing to more a more Speed Metal vibe. The vocals sound like typical South American Thrash or Speed might sound; very raw, raspy and manly. The second track, Escrito Sobre El Aqua, is just as killer as the first. The guitar riffs are catchy and threatening, and while the guitar solos are nothing special, they add flavor.
The EP, while having an incredibly badass cover-art, does have some negatives. My main problem with this is that it's so short. It may sound like something silly to complain about, but that's really the only thing that I can discern from this. After listening to two great tracks, it leaves you wanting more and a taste of desire for more Speed Metal. Alas, we get none. And thus, this is why it loses points. Also, there's no falsettos. What more can I say?
IF you manage to find this, I'd definitely recommend getting it.
