I must be going soft. I've listened to Chaos by Russia's Ease of Disgust many times, and, no matter how many times I try to find something horribly wrong with it, I end up with nothing. Even the breakdowns (which are used sparingly; no more than once per song) are pretty good.
The guitars in this album are absolutely amazing. They shift from brutally heavy to breathtakingly technical to (sometimes) melodic. There's even an acoustic track (Between Nowhere and Never, Pt. 2) that fits surprisingly well in this CD.
As for the drums, the guy clearly knows what he's doing. Everything he does seems thoroughly planned out; no two tracks will he be playing the same fill. When you might expect him to do a blast beat, don't be surprised if takes it in an opposite direction. However, when he goes for speed, the listener will be startled at the speed he puts on display. His speed is best on display in the eighth song, Disincarnate; it's incredibly fast.
The bass is ok. It mostly just follows the guitar, which is a bit of a disappointment. It never stands out from the hectic frenzy of the aptly named Chaos.
The vocals are, for the most part, outstanding. His lows are some of the most brutal I've ever heard. The highs, however, are fairly generic deathcore. He does break out the occasional pig squeal, but, thankfully, these moments are few and far between.
In summation, I very highly recommend this album. If you are or have ever been a fan of any type of death metal, you need to buy this album.
Standout tracks: Constructed, Disincarnate, Kaos, and Abyss Revelations
