Early Grave - Tomorrow I Am You

Tomorrow I Am You - Early Grave - 81%

MystifyXD, April 6th, 2010

Early Grave’s career was a short but a meaningful one. Although they have only made a single album (“Tomorrow I Am You”), it has shown much of their skill. Well, the music is generally deathcore, but it has some black metal, some thrash, some death metal, etc. making it quite different. The production is slightly raw with the bass well-hidden. What a bummer. The lyrics were a shame though. They were like Jonas Bros. lyrics, only with more angst and more profanity.

The vocals definitely have black metal influence. It’s raspier than what you hear in your usual deathcore and there’s no pig squealing (“bree”) here. We also have death grunts and clean singing for additional vocals. The grunts sure add more edge, but the singing takes a little while to get used to. The drums surely are a mix of influences; quite like extreme metal. The guitars still have the deathcore edge, with a breakdown or two, but it has but it has some thrash and death metal in it too.

The intro of “As Thick as Thieves” screams your face off ASAP. Heck, this instead should be the intro itself. The real enjoyment though, starts at “Golden Hearts”. This song is one of the best in the bunch, pounding off with fury till the end. “To the Grave” has a spin placed after its chorus that sounds way different from the verses. The tragic-sounding flow of the song is appealing. “I Have Been Waiting for Decades” has a simple yet cool intro which was also used on the song riffs. Although there’s a part where the song slowed down, it gains its ferocity after. “Like a Widow at the Wake”, the last song, still managed to give the fury that the album, in general, gave.

Another nice “metal as fuck” deathcore release. Although songs follow a certain formula, they are done in a nice manner, and quite experimental for having influences from genre to genre. Snag this one instead of the usual BMTH filth.
