Drunk Horse - Adult Situations

Epic - 90%

purerockfury, January 12th, 2005

Drunk Horse is probably the most sophisticated garage rock band to ever walk the earth, and "Adult Situations" proves it. Lyrically (dealing with shoes, male prostitutes, drug cartels and even Bach) the band takes a cynical back seat while the music does all the driving. Bandleader Eli and rhythm powerhouse Crypes, Cyrus and Niles bring the listen a mammoth of an album.
The albums opens with the high-energy lick, 'National Lust', which like the majority of the album is jam-packed with pounding drums and guitar riffs to boot. Aside from the catchy backing vocals, this opening tune definitely sets the tone for the rest of the album.
Much like the first two albums, Drunk Horse takes simple ideas and makes them subtly complex. Songs like 'Company Man' and 'The Bitch is Bach' barrow ideas from other genre's while songs like 'Fried Chicken Cadillac' are more straight ahead rock. The big difference in this album is the amount of influence. This album was produced by the Fucking Champ's Tim Green, a more metallic outlet, who did a great job capturing the band high energy.
Overall this album, as are the last two albums, is a big success for the Oakland quartet and yet another stepping-stone in their musical progress.
