Disciples of Something... - 50%

For their third and final release in 2012, Diocletian teamed in their second split release with the American blackened death metal band, Weregoat for Disciples of War. Diocletian's part contains a new song called War Messiah, while they've re-recorded Gesundrian from their first split with Denouncement Pyre, Chaos Rising, as well as re-recording Master/Enslaver from their first EP, Decimator. As for Weregoat, their part is fully original with three tracks.

To start with Diocletian's part, War Messiah sounds like an "old school" song from the band, preferably from Decimator. I like the simple and heavy-toned riffs, while the drums never fail to amaze. I also like the raw death growls from the mix. Gesundrian unsurprisingly is raw - more than the original, yet still very damn similar. At least they cut that ridiculous bridge's chants, but it's still not a great song. And Master/Enslaver's riffs sounded better than the original and the bass was very powerful. It sounds a lot darker than the original version. Yet this song, too, is bad but more of an improvement of the original version.

Now for Weregoat's part: Primal Hordes of Intolerant Hate reminds me of Bolt Thrower because of the riffs, but the music still resembles a lot of black metal (for obvious reasons), as are the drums. The vocals at least are not shrieks but death growls. The song progresses from its black/death metal pace to slower, doom-like music; giving the song some texture and maybe even an identity to an original sound. Obviously, the song must end with crazy guitar solo/s and fast music and it sounded right. War of Apocalyptic Aggression has a pretty long intro and for the song's entirety, it was stale and repetitive. Crushed Beneath the Banner of Baphomet had more unexpected layers within the music; like drum patterns and even death growls. The song's structure is also unpredictable which is a plus.

So it's clear as day that the opening tracks of each band are the best, respectively. Weregoat were surprisingly good on their part, while Diocletian's part that contains two re-recorded songs that are generally bad wasn't the best, I think they should've recorded two original songs instead of re-recording existing ones that are bad. Weregoat gets 70% on their part, while Diocletian's would be at 30%. As for the split itself, I guess it's 50%.
