Hailing from New Zealand, Diocletian is a new death/black metal band that plays intense and raw metal. 2008 brings in their latest EP, "Sect Of Swords". This seven inch proves to be a relentless listen, full of intensity, noise, and violence.
Diocletian essentially blends the war like qualities of Revenge, but play more varied music than their influences. There are plenty of doom sections, blast beats, and really memorable riffs everywhere. Not only that, they understand that structure is an important aspect to making songs, so riffs are arranged effectively, and provide the listener with many parts to grab on to.
The first track, "Infinite Destruction" is probably the best example of Diocletian's use of effective song structures. It's a 6 minute song that manages to be interesting. There's a lot of fucking intensity and violence being played here, as it was captured right in their rehearsal room, so that live element really stands out well. The ending few notes of the song trail off really well to end this side of the EP.
The second side opens up with "Sect of Swords", which is just pure destruction in audio format. After some aggressive blast beats, a bludgeon-like percussive riff comes out, only to build up to even more fast parts. This song is is only about 3 minutes but definitely does a good job at being to the point and powerful. Finish this side off with a killer cover of Blasphemy's "Weltering In Blood", you've got yourself a fine EP.
"Sect of Swords" has great production too. As mentioned, this EP was recorded live in their rehearsal room, and it really gives the recording a unique edge. It sounds raw but each instrument can be heard and effectively come together as one unit.
Fans of Canadian cults such as Blasphemy and Revenge, or Australian hordes like Bestial Warlust and Destruktor will not want to miss this EP, or anything from Diocletian for that matter. Another band that needs to put out an LP, because everything they've done is a worthy listen.
