Dimmu Borgir - Eonian

Council of Choirs and Goths - 15%

bandwurm, October 2nd, 2018

This record sucks. If you by any chance are just on the brink of getting into this band, by every means stay away from this release. It will salten the soup for you, and your ambition to listen to anything else of this band will be gone forever.

Now thankfully I don't have to waste too many letters on describing the actual music, because there really isn't as much to describe here. This shitfest of an album apparently has 10 songs listed, but don't get fooled by this because you will listen to one song only, a song consisting of mediocre guitars that do not much more than arranging a basic melody, some steady but repetitive and uninspired drums, a bass.. no wait, no bass guitar, some shagrath somewhere in between and finally... Choirs. Choirs. And fucking more Choirs. If you actually manage to listen beyond the dreadful first single "Interdimensional Summit" (which was probably recorded on some pretty effective drugs as the title also suggests), you may think you made it through the worst part.. but no, it goes on, and on, and on. Never ever does creativity on the side of the band set in, the same formula is used over and over again: Mid-paced, straightforward post black metal with heavy gothic influences. Generic riffs, some double bass here and there, a mostly talking shagrath and choirs that are so abundandly present at all times tey will burn themselves in your inner conciousness, haunting your dreams for months to come.

Going back to the first single, it's awful. The cheesy chorus sounds so cheerful and positive it's like shagrath gave the job to mickey mouse. A corpse painted mickey mouse of course. What is sad about this is that this is probably the most creative they get on this record. Everything else is a worthless save game for a band that doesn't seem to be sure on which direction to go in the future. At some points it sounds more like something CoF or Nightwish would put out. And really, if you're a sucker for gothic metal you may actually get something out of this... but for anyone already familiar with the better stuff they put out this is a stab to the heart. No aggressive outbursts, no blast beat parts, an atmosphere that is mostly destroyed by unstoppable choirs and a vocalist who has had his best days long ago.

But in the end, rating it 0% would be unjust since there are SOME things the album did okay. The outro is actually the best song on the album for me since it feels like it's the only time the actual band has a moment to BREATHE in between this shitfest of overdosed arrangements, being finally able to do what they're good at, building momentum for great atmospheric interludes and creating audible landscapes. That said, Ill conclude this review by reminding angry and disappointed fans of the fact that this band has done some amazing shit in the past, and that those records are still there to listen to.
