Destruction - Infernal Overkill

Pointless and repetitive - 63%

Human666, March 25th, 2007

Destruction's first LP is their worst in my opinion. The doesn't have a solid songwriting here and the production is pretty fragile. It doesn't have an overwhelming straightforward sound, the guitars sounds dull and so are the drums. The vocals also sounds weak [though better than how they were in the earlier demos] and Schirmer has some sudden short shrieks which sounds awful. Every time when I hear these shrieks I think he tried to do black metal screams but he didn't had enough air and it all blew out.

The riffage is alright but not brilliant as it will be in their later albums. It sounds fair, and has some catchy moments which makes you headbang like a maniac, but most of the time it's just sounds like they were messing a bit with some scales here and there and wrote improvised riffs. There aren't enough riffs also, and they repeat themselves too much and can't carry a whole song. The lead guitar is awesome though, it sounds pretty good and blasting like a buzz saw and it doesn't get repetitive as the riffs.

'Invincible Force' is a kick ass opener. The main riff is pretty good and the solo after the verses sounds awesome and step up the thrashing level here. It also builds great and doesn't become boring even a bit, totally awesome track. 'The Ritual' is a boring song honestly. It just sounds dull and drags on for almost 6 minutes, it stuck in the same place and nothing really develops, it feels like a filler for me. 'Bestial Invasion' is a pretty good track. It has a pretty catchy chorus and flawless riffs and intense drumming. When the main riff begins, this song become fast, furious, piercing and brutal exactly as it's title. The lead guitar is dizzying like a combat airplane, the drumming is decent and increases the riffs a merciless sense...it's an excellent song for pogo. 'Tormentor' has also a shitload of awesome riffs [but I liked Slayer version much more], 'Thrash Attack' is a good instrumental with some catchy riffs, but it becomes overlong. Rest of the songs are blends together and sounds dull. The riffs uninteresting, they doesn't have any heat and they sounds unimaginative, they sounds repetitive and drags on and on.
I actually can't feel anything while I listen to them, it's just doesn't make sense at all due to the riffs which sounds almost the same.

It's really an overlong album. The songs aren't varied enough so they can't keep you interested, most of them just aren't enough aggressive or intense even a bit and they sounds repetitive and dull. When I reachs 'Black Death', I usually give up and leave this album. Man, this is really difficult to suffer another 7 boring minutes which just drags on and on, after you heard too much of the same shit. It has some enjoyable moments, but most of the time this album sounds average and nothing more. Get it only if you are Destruction fan.
