I usually have problems with bands that were formed recently but play like 80s heavy metal bands. They are not necessarily bad, but no matter how much they claim to bring back the awesomeness of the past, they often lack what made the awesomeness in question: the fact that at the time, this sound was completely new, often even shocking for some people, and mostly, very creative. But luckily, lack of creativity or ability to stand out is not Destrose's problem.
What exactly makes them so original? Is it the fact that, while the second song is pure heavy metal, the first one sounds more like pop rock? No, this is not that rareā¦ But this is Destrose's talent: taking a genre that is rarely considered experimental, and giving it their own twisted sound. While I have heard many catchy and fast heavy metal songs, "Skykiller is one that I would certainly tell apart from the rest. As soon as you hear that opening riff, not only is it awesome, but you feel taken into the band's imaginary universe. It is a fascinating story, that you're not quite sure to understand (what is a sky killer?), but you still know there is a special story, and that it's quite interesting. It is also quite fun to listen to. Try not to have this main riff or this chorus stuck in your head.
"Deathless Memories", the poppy opening, is pretty catchy too. Sure, it tries to sound light and cute rather than hard-edged, but the band's personality still shines through. While not heavy, the chorus has energy and passion. The vocalist sure doesn't sing like she is bored. In fact, she gives it all to every line she sings, and this is another thing that makes the two songs enjoyable to listen to.
So yeah, Destrose sure is having fun. They are not trying to be brutal, to stick to the conventions of a genre, to bring back the 80s because they think everything today sucks, to show they are more metal than you. They only care about creating their own world. And this is one of the main rules of music: if the band is obviously having fun, then so will the listener. This proves that, as long as it is made by people with enough imagination, any genre of music can have a special sound.
