Deprogrammazione - Non esiste - 30%

Phuling, April 28th, 2009

These Italians apparently tries to combine the old school Norwegian black metal sound with grindcore. There aren’t a lot of bands doing the black/grind thingie, but honestly I wouldn’t really place Deprogrammazione in the category either. I’ve never heard of them before, but with "Non esiste" as their showcase I find it to lean way more towards progressive grindcore.

Sure, some occasional breaks tend to sound a bit like black metal, and a lot of riffing reeks of black. But it almost gets lost in the frantic blasting, which carries a punkish chaotic feel to it, and gets me thinking of Cripple Bastards rather than Darkthrone. "Discarica innevata" carries a cold riffage of atmospheric, chilling black metal. But you tend to forget all about as soon as the disturbing vocals set in. The main screams sound like a crustie trying to do some high-pitch squeals, but not very well. And when the back-up growls takes over it gets even more punkier, and the combination really reminds me of Cripple Bastards’ early material, before they’d honed their skill in the true grindcore manner. And back then they weren’t all that great, and neither is Deprogrammazione.

Some riffs might be cool, a few ideas might be interesting, but overall the chaos takes the front row seat and charges for control of the whole thing. The blasting is crude whereas slower tunes like "Morte mia" is a lot more interesting since you can concentrate on the music, and won’t get lost in the mish mash of sounds. On the other hand the same song has very strong metalcore vibes, which ruins the whole thing anyway… The production doesn’t help to clear up the matter; its rather thin and noisy sound just adds to the chaos. I don’t know what to think, but I do know that I won’t listen to this album again.
