Fourteen. That is how old Sammy Urwin was when he recorded and released this 5-track demo. It is the most disturbingly pleasing demo I have heard in a long time.
The guitars are gut-wrenchingly good. He caters for fans of brutal death metal, old school death metal, and some slamming for the hardcore generation - all to near-perfection. The (programmed) drums are very intricate throughout, with several short solos scattered around, and they sound pretty real. Lastly the vocals - they are the dirtiest squeals imaginable! I find myself trying to sing along even though it’s the same “euuuuuwwrgh” for every single line.
Checking out his MySpace, his main influences are Napalm Death and a whole array of grindcore and death metal artists - all evident in his music. He has several other projects on MySpace - all of which quite similar to this project, but none as brutal, well-written or likeable as Defective Brain - and I am glad he chose to release this one as his first demo.
Apart from an unnecessary, though thankfully short interlude, the four proper tracks on this 6 minute demo are top quality (especially “Slaughtered Family”). www.myspace.com/sammysmusic666
