Decrypt - Holy Erotic Rapture

Insane - 90%

1234SLAYER1234, February 23rd, 2013

Wow. I wish I could just write that and be done with it, but for the sake of proper analysis I better justify myself.

Why has no one heard of this band? I stumbled upon this album for a mere £2 online, and it is well worth the money. You can sum up this album with one word. FAST. Listening to this album almost gave me concern over the drummer's health in particular; this album seems almost too extreme for its own good.

"Holy Erotic Rapture" is a very diverse album, which can be unusual in the grindcore genre. The band incorporates a good amount of differing musical ideas, for example in "Immaculate Deception" there are impressive technical guitar sections added in around the two minute mark. A further example of the band's use of experimentation can be seen in the third track "Grind A.D. ", at 10 seconds in the band suddenly burst into a hoe-down style riff before beginning a aural assault once again. To me this shows the band's sense of humour.

The vocals on "Holy Erotic Rapture" consist of a typical high pitched screech, and a death metal style grunt. This creates good variation, as this style is used similar to bands such as Dying Fetus, where the different vocal parts use call and response. The bass guitar also shines here, it us mostly hidden by the guitars, but is frequently given the spotlight to do a bass solo. These short bursts on the bass are often used as bridge passages within songs.

As I mentioned at the start of this review, this album is almost TOO fast for its own good. And due to this, the drummer here deserves serious respect for his performance on this album. The drums uphold the overall chaos created by the other parts, but also keeps it interesting, not relying on constant blast-beating. Relying on blast beating can be a common problem with some extreme metal artists these days.

Overall, I feel this is one of the best grindcore albums I have ever heard, it is will worth having in your collection, but be prepared for 37 minutes of bludgeoning grind. This leads me onto why this album gets a 90% from me, it is brilliant, but its intensity can overwhelm you at certain points.

Standouts- "Grind A.D. ", "Immaculate Deception ", "Holy Erotic Rapture", "Fecal Matter Platter " and "Human Suppository "
