Deathrage - Souls of the Lost

PRETTY DECENT OFFERING OF BLACKEND THRASH - 75%

TheAntagonist, June 26th, 2009

Deathrage, from Holland, offer up what would seem to be a promising dish of blackened thrash on first listen. What it falls short in accomplishing is breaking any new ground; however, this isn’t really an issue if you enjoy a no frills, straight ahead thrash attack. On an up note there is tons of aggression. Picture Kreator meets Dissection in a back alley.

The guitar work is top notch as the solos are soaring and well-timed, in that they are neither too short or long. The Dissection influence pops up right away in “Creature of the Night”. The breakdown section in “Blood Angel” at around 2:41 is immense, right before it treads into a somewhat doomy and bleak atmosphere. “Souls of the Lost” starts out very strong and has a lot of variety to keep you coming back for more.

One thing that you cannot deny is talent. Deathrage seem to have excellent idea of the sound they are trying to attain. My only critique is I think the vocals could be a bit more menacing, but I love the Jon Nodtveidt type style delivery. They could try to forge some new ground in the genre, but as far as I can see, they are doing just fine. This band is definitely worth checking out if you like Thrash, Death or a combo of both.
