Seeing as this demo has only three songs to it, I feel that a song-by-song review is in order.
The opening track, Atonement, is a very solid track. The drums are consistent and the guitars are actually rather catchy. The solo around the 2:30 mark isn't overly technical, but it fits the song perfectly. The bass seems to follow the general guitar riffs, but isn't very noticeable unless you are paying very close attention, giving the song a rather dry sound. Overall the instruments are well played. The vocals on the other hand are... very bland. Just your typical metalcore 'screams' (yells as I refer to them).
End Times starts off with a very mellow riff, with spoken word over top. Personally, I love the sound of this part. About a minute into the song though, it stops with the mellow riff and goes into very simple guitars and drum fills for a brief few seconds, then goes into a similar sound to the first song (solid drums, catchy yet simple guitar riffs, and and almost unnoticeable bass, with bland metalcore vocals). This song sounds as if the band was trying to write a metal version of the rock anthems that are very numerous these days. This may work for those that like the metalcore sound, but those who don't will not appreciate this song very much.
The third song, The Psychophant, sees more use of the double bass drums, unlike the previous two songs. It starts with the typical metalcore vocals, and similar sound to the other two songs, but then changes to drum fills with slower guitar riffs and spoken word. This is by far the best part of the song, but is soon gone, to go back to the general sound of the demo. It does this change a few times throughout the song.
Overall this demo is very consistent in its sound, and has very solid writing. The lyrics aren't bad, but nothing special. The guitars and bass are very simple, but the drums have a more complex/technical sound to them, which is nice given the simplicity of the guitars. The drums keep the demo from getting boring in my opinion. This demo is a good starting point for a metalcore band in a small town where the only other bands around are cover bands, but the band has a lot of room for improvement. Especially the vocalist.
For those who don't mind metalcore, this is a nice, short listen (being only 12 minutes long). But to those who don't enjoy metalcore, I wouldn't recommend picking it up.
