Curse - The Awakening... and the Old

Impaled and Crucified - 80%

Nattskog7, June 12th, 2022
Written based on this version: 2020, Digital, Redefining Darkness Records

Following a few years of hiatus, Swedish blackened heavy metallers Curse are back with a new EP to follow their two demos of ferocious metal extremism.

Grisly riffs churn out a morbidly energetic display of crushing songwriting with pummelling drums and howled vocals soon adding more to the ferocious onslaught of thrashing, dark and evil heavy metal which is brooding with aggression and a tormenting old school attack of extremity. Delving into an almost war metal style primitive onslaught with plenty of more intricate instrumental assaults, giving a venomous sound that is contagiously hectic and frenzied while driven by a precise rhythmic battery that keeps everything nicely tied together.

Curse are not your typical catchy, anthemic black-thrash band, though they do have some killer hooks, these Swedish maniacs burn the flame of bands like Nifelheim or Aura Noir with a savage and devastatingly intense yet stripped back infliction of pure heavy metal might. Unrelenting and barbaric, this is pure extreme metal without any pretence, just utterly vicious music that gets under your skin with a ripping conjuration of demonic, hellish sounds from the whole band. Grooving sections add a doomy touch to get everyone banging their head while these parts never detract from the overall storming aggression of the demo. A stunning balance of total mayhem.

Though this is a new band to me, I am incredibly glad that these guys came back to unleash a new EP, I feel the underground would have been robbed of something pure and maniacal without this, as Curse are fantastic and deserve to be blasted at full volume. Go check out this fierce demo as soon as it’s out or be doomed to miss out on some killer blackened speeding monstrosities.
