Cultura Tres - El mal del bien

Cultura Tres – El Mal del Bien - 70%

Gur, June 4th, 2011

Cultura Tres is not well known throughout most of the world, but they are huge in South America. With this new sludge doom metal album ‘El Mal Del Bien’ this band from Venezuela has made a statement: ‘We are bigger than Venezuela and South America!’. The Dutch drummer (former Cheesy drummer) could be a portal to Holland and the rest of Europe, if this album didn’t pave the way already.

The last album of Cultura Tres, ‘La Cura’ was less sludge and more up tempo but had less quality then the new one. You can hear the band progressed in the two years between the albums and also the sound quality is much better.

Cultura Tres have a great sound that immediately makes you think of South America and sometimes it reaches the Sepultura sound. (I think they could make a great sludge doom cover.)
They combine slow songs with uptempo songs which makes the album very diverse. Also the lyrics are in English and in Spanish so they took a step into the world but didn’t forget where they came from. My favourite songs are the fast song “The Grace” and the bonus track from a 1992 song called “Holy Graveyard”. The second bonus track is a cover from Black Sabbath called Black Sabbath.

I can’t wait for Cultura Tres to expand their territory because they really deserve it. Go check them out!
