Another Short Dose of Hellenic Mastery. - 90%

Though they're a new band, Cult of Eibon have approached this EP with the all of the experience of some of their members being deeply immersed and involved with the Greek black metal community for many years. All of the typical traits of 90's Hellenic BM are brought forth to Fullmoon Invocation with class. Contained are those tempo changes from slow ritualistic passages, to mid paced uplifting heavy metal type grooves, to surging forth in blasts of palm muted tremolo riffs. Squealing pinch harmonics are tacked on to many of the riffs and the inclusion of the eerie cavernous synths and ambient non metal pieces are integral to the darkly regal atmosphere. Dual vocal styles are employed in tandem, one of which sounds akin to the vocals of fellow Greeks, Ithaqua.

There's more to this EP than 90's Hellenic BM. They've taken some influence from mid era Rotting Christ, in particular the Khronos/Genesis albums. One example are the opening strains of the first track Breaking the Seal of Koth which sounds fairly similar to parts of Rotting Christ's If It Ends Tomorrow. Even some of the sparse synth work throughout also recalls the vibe of those aforementioned Rotting Christ works.

Cult of Eibon managed not to painstakingly reproduce the poor, murky production values of Storm Studios, from where mighty albums such as Non Serviam emerged. Instead they favoured a modern, yet not too polished production, in which each part is clearly heard. The chunky guitars are pretty upfront in the mix.

The three metal tracks presented are of real quality, though The Gate of Dyleth Leen is by a small margin, the highlight for me. Those breakdowns in that track are made even more majestic with the use of good old choral and orchestral synths. The riffing throughout recalls albums like Non Serviam and Thy Mighty Contract and a short lead guitar piece lilts nicely towards the end of the track.

This short EP has got all the magic stuff that was/is great about 90's Hellenic black Metal. It's a release that's also displays what's great about the new blood currently evoking that Old coffin Spirit in what is clearly a revival of late, of one of Metal's great (if often overlooked) sub genres. I'm just simply glad to be around to witness and enjoy this resurgence. Definitely for fans of Rotting Christ, Varathron, Tatir, Caedes Cruenta, Hierophant's Descent etc.
