Cryptic Brood - Outcome of Obnoxious Science

Biting Through Flesh - 85%

Fresh from death-doom Metallers Cryptic Brood is their latest full length of vile extremity.

Pungent doomy guitars and pummelling drums draw us into a cavern of putrid death metal decadence with eerie soundscapes and a truly horrific slow-burn horror feel with a fierce bass tone underlining the gruesome riffs beautifully. The production and songwriting are a huge step up in terms of technical proficiency from their “Braineater” album which I also reviewed and really enjoyed. Though some of the raw bite is sacrificed on this album we are instead given a much more monolithic growl of grooving instrumentals and spewing vocals that will definitely appeal to all the fans of the old school death metal and death-doom revival moment in the vein of Cerebral Rot and Fetid with a storming array of glistening offal offered in the most despicably morbid musical form. There is also some additional dissonant flare to this album which drives the slightly uncomfortable touches of the previous into a rivetingly disturbing new territory of atmospheric prowess and blundering aggression in perfect harmony.

This is reflected gorgeously by the sheer diversity in vocals from pained screams to guttural belches and everything in between, definitely giving the brilliance of the guitar, bass and drums something to work well with. While perhaps nothing we have never heard before, this is still a flawlessly enjoyable take on death-doom with a comforting familiarity in its vile brand of musical thunder, delivering a crushing new release that is absolutely worthwhile and hopefully will generate the band some new fans while pleasing those of us who knew about them already, I certainly am impressed for one.

Fantastically dark and brooding, disgustingly rotted sounding and totally devastating, it’s a definite best from the band so far and a monstrously magnificent addition to the underground death metal scene.
