Cryonic State - Voice of the Insane

Cool Megadeth-inspired thrash - 65%

Muloc7253, March 15th, 2008

This is a pretty good EP of very Megadeth-inspired thrash, infact, these songs sound just like outtakes from 'Countdown to Extinction', except with not quite a strong production and with the vocals being a tad lower.

Still, 'Countdown to Extinction' is a great album, and 'Voice of the Insane' is a great little EP. 'Sailing Away' is a good thrashing opener, which leads into 'Break the Chains', definately the catchiest and thus best track on the demo, with some excellent riffing that builds up in the chorus very climatically. Very well pulled off. 'Eternal Heaven' is another good track with some more choice guitarwork, a little slower than the previous two and a little more 'Youthanasia' too, but just as good.

We end with a decent cover of Megadeth's 'Symphony of Destruction', although it's actually my least favourite track, probably because I like the original so much. It's not bad, but the vocalist isn't quite Dave...I don't know, I've heard a lot of covers of this song by bands I like (Arch Enemy for instance) but never really found one that I liked a lot. Oh well, this is still a decent little tribute.

If these guys go ahead and record an album I'd be interested in it, maybe with a bit of a stronger mix. But as it stands, this is a pretty good thrash demo. Now all run round throwing the horns and crying "thrash is back!" at the top of your Mustaine-impersonating lungs.
