Grindcore and Progressive Do They Mix? - 100%

serial_killer_miller, July 23rd, 2009

When you think of the word opposite I'm sure most of us would think of things like black or white, good and evil, and in this case the grindcore genre and the progressive genre. Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think a band would ever combine those genres or at least not combine them in a way that is the least bit relevant. However, anything is possible in the world of metal including an album that combines two completely different genres.

The album Son of Sulfur provides fast tempo riffing, chaotic drumming, and aggressive vocals while at the same time slowing things down. I find in most cases when a band tries to do something like that they end up failing miserably however; this is one of the few occasions in which the tempo changes are calculated and technical.

In addition to the combination of progressive and grindcore elements found on this album if you really listen to this album truthfully and thoroughly you should notice that mathcore riffs are strune throughout the album as well, but they are done so in such a way that they take nothing away from the song structure. In fact, those crazy time signatures add to the uniqueness of the album over all.

Along with the musical aspects of this album we also find some humour in the song titles such as "Children of Boredom", "Pigeonsmasher", and "Scab Coated Attraction." It allows you to have a lighthearted take on the album while you are enjoying the music.

Now to answer the question do grindcore and progressive mix? Well, normally I would say absolutely not, however in music as well as in life there are always exceptions to every rule.
