Cromb is another unknown band with unknown members making just the same music that thousands of other myspace-wannabes do, right? I guess most of you thought so, at least initially, when checking out this page. Sorry, guys, but I have to disappoint you - this time we got something serious.
Cromb consists on this demo of three members: Kalle Turesson (guitars, bass, drums, drum programming), Toob Brynedal (vocals) and Andreas Hellkvist (hammond organ), making, according to their own, hypnotizing death metal. This label is quite precise, as repetative yet catchy riffs truly mesmerize. Every musician knows how to play their instruments, that's for sure.
What differs Cromb from the other (death) metal bands are two factors: the composition and and hammond organ. As for the first, the metre is usually about 7/8 or 6/8 or so, making it a bit hard to follow at first, but adding a different and fascinating touch. The use of different instruments for the lay-out of the songs is definitely pretty clever. Guitars are sharp, bass is audible and certainly picked, vocals stand for usual deep death metal growls. Drums are mostly programmed and it is a bit shame, but everything can't be perfect, I guess.
The fifth instrument is what makes Cromb a band it is: hammond organ, played by Andreas Hellkvist. With the aid of guitars and drums it creates an eerie and spasmic atmosphere with its distant and strange sound. A weird, indeed.
Lyrics are bit funny at times, but fairly good as is production. The demo I have is just four tracks on a copy-CD, I guess the original looks the same. Some of the information I got from the split-CD which I also own.
So take a moment or two and give this band a chance. Maybe you don't like it but you must admit - it sound professional. If you got interested, buy a split-album (4 Tormenting Ways To Death) as this demo seems quite rare. I found some tracks from myspace (somewhere) aswell, but you need a certain amount of patience to find them out.
Favourite tracks: "Beyond", "Marble Portals".
