Crescent Lament - The Forgotten Winter

Great follow-up EP - 87%

ruigeroeland, November 10th, 2008

After releasing a very enjoyable demo earlier this year, Taiwanese Gothic/Black Metal band Crescent Lament is back already with their second release, the EP “The Forgotten Winter” featuring two brand new tracks.

Musically, the band somewhat moves away of their Gothic/Melodic Black/Doom Metal blend. Instead, the music leans more towards pure Gothic Metal. The keyboard is still an important element in Crescent Lament’s music, but instead of the somewhat evil atmosphere on the demo, it is now used in a somewhat more Symphonic fashion. The Black influence is still somewhat audible though, because the riffing tends to be somewhat fast for Gothic Metal.

Female vocalist Muer remains the focus of the bands music. Like the demo, Black Metal vocals are also absent from the new songs on this EP. Instead, there are some grunted passages to accompany the clean female vocals.

Besides the actual music, the band has also put a lot of effort and thought in the presentation of their material, culminating in a professional look of the EP and more importantly: a great production.

A tip would be to make an English version of their website to satisfy the interest of potential fans from outside of their native country. From what I could make up from their Taiwanese website, it seems the band is already working on a full-length release entitled “The Deepest Despair”, so they are quite the productive bunch. If the quality is up to par with their first two releases, this will certainly be a release I will be anticipating.
