Closer - Darkness in Me

The "new" school of Swedish Melodic Death Metal - 96%

Invaginator, June 16th, 2007

I received recently a Promo CD of a Swedish Melodic Death Metal band called Closer. On the first look at the band picture on the backside, I saw a few well-dressed guys, looking like the Cosa Nostra. Well, I said to myself, that's quite an original image of a band. And as cool and fancy their image is, so is their music. I didn't expect such a crushing Melodic Death Metal attack. Sweden will always be a guarantee for good and kickass Melodic Death Metal, there's no doubt, and for sexy blondes with huge tits and round asses.

These Swedes come up with a mix of Death Metal and other hard Metal styles, creating a powerful and impulsive Melodic Death Metal. Closer's first release, a 3 track EP entitled 'Darkness In Me', is loaded with great riffs, a million ideas that always will link them to Sweden, and a feeling for the right way how to incoporate melody and hard tunes into Death Metal, without making it sound lame. No wonder that they consider bands like Hypocrisy, In Flames, Children of Bodom and Pantera as influences. If you take the best of these bands, you will only get music that will rip you from you chair and punch you into deep coma.

I must admit to like all 3 songs the same; none of them is of less quality. To me it seems, that these young and talented guys have more potential in this little EP than most bands in a 10 release discography. I find it great to hear such fresh and cool music. Their Death Metal is way more cool than aggressive, but still it has power and sounds like a punch into your face. It's hard to find words for this 3 songs, that last together only 11:22 minutes, but they just fucking got all you wanna and need to hear. The vocals - ripping your arse; the guitars - shredding skin; the drums - grinding concrete!!! Only thing left to say we can expect a great Full Lenght from this band soon. And then mosh and headbang till coma sets in.
