Human Jerky

Let's pretend none of us knows a single Cattle Decapitation album, let's treat "Human Jerky" like there aren't any follow-up albums yet. In this case, this review is quite short, because "Human Jerky" is basically one thing: mostly confusing and typical grindcore. With 18 songs and a playing time of just over 16 minutes, the average playing time of a song is not even a minute or less, depending on how the playing time was distributed among the songs.

So we have 17 songs here that cross the finish line after 30 seconds to a minute and one song that is over 4 minutes long. It is very difficult to differentiate between the songs because they all sound the same. Basically you can get a good picture of this album based on the last song "Colon-Blo" alone. This song has everything that makes up the whole album. Grincore riffs that rely on bloody brutality, drumming that switches back and forth between blast beats and groove, a bestial vocal acrobat and bass lines that are hardly noticeable.

"Colon-Blo" is the only song that sounds complete and not like a 17 piece puzzle. Still, it's not bad, it's even fun, but it always fluctuates between bad and good. In some places you want to freak out, in other places you get a bit bored by the monotony of the songs mentioned above. None of the songs shows what this band is capable of. The later brilliance doesn't shine through yet, but the fun of it. You can't create a grindcore album like this without having fun with the material. All in all this shit is fun even though nothing foreshadows the brilliance that is to come a few years later. Fuck it, it is cool! Sometimes it's good but mostly bad despite it's fun all the time.
